Thread: Social Security wants payment before providing med records for appeal.

Question Social Security wants payment before providing med records for appeal.

I have been denied SSD twice and would like to appeal the decision. As my med records were sent directly from my doctors to SSA, I do not have access to them. I feel that I need to review them to prepare for my appeal and requested copies of the records from SS. Social Security sent me a letter demanding $49.00 before they would send me the records. I would like to know if that is proper as the Disability program from SS is directly related to my appeal. Thanks for your advice.

I am sure they are allowed to charge you a fee and this fee does not sound high. But you may be able to get access electronically to view your disability file. Consider, if you had hired a lawyer they would have access to your medical records electronically to review prior to your administrative hearing. I would contact the SSA and find out if you can also access your files online to review if you want to avoid a fee.
