If you are denied at the application level you have 60 days from the date of the denial to file an appeal which is called a reconsideration. This process sends your application back to another disability examiner, who was not involved in the first decision. If you are denied again, which can take approximately 30 to 90 days, you have another 60 days to appeal a second time and request an administrative hearing.

This is where the waiting can really begin. Because there may only be a handful of judges in each hearing office and hundreds of cases to review, some disability applicants may have to wait one to two years for a hearing. If you are denied at the hearing you can appeal again or you can refile your case.

If you are approved at any point in the process you should expect to wait another 30 to 90 days to get an approval letter which will list your estimated payment amount and payment date.

So how long will you have to wait? It is really anyone’s guess. If you are lucky and you are immediately approved you could get benefits within30 to 90 days. If you are like most applicants you will be denied.
